Living With Allergies

Hi guys,

Today I wanted to raise awareness on how important food allergies are and how it can be a difficult day to day task to deal with them.

I have a lot of friends who suffer from nut and peanut allergies and I have been lucky to have people that I could go to, to discuss how I feel and what to eat and how to live basically.

Some people don’t realise the extreme affects food allergies from eggs, fish, some fruits, nuts and peanuts can have on you and how it can be a life or death situation.

I have suffered from Asthma since I was three years old and it came along with many allergies to dogs, cats (well all furry animals really), grass, pollen and dust. I managed to go fifteen years without realising I had grown into having a severe nut and peanut allergy that had came from being asthmatic … little did I know that you can grow into allergies as well as growing out of them.

I am someone who has experienced life without a food allergy and life with a food allergy as I just mentioned. I cannot stress enough how life changing it is living with one, which sounds slightly dramatic but there is not a day that goes by where you can’t think about being allergic to nuts and peanuts. I still find it bizarre to think that I used to be carefree eating a jar of Nutella with a spoon, eating Chinese and Indian food, being able to try some exotic food abroad and not be scared to taste something my friend or family member has asked me to taste. Now I need to even check my shampoo to see if it contains any almond oil hahah! Simple things like having to take the time to look at packaging on food, going out to a restaurant, flying abroad, someone opening a bag of nuts or peanuts in front of you … it is on going. Not only did it change my life but my families too. My mum and dad live for Bombay Mix and KP nuts on a Friday night in front of the T.V and now they can’t eat anything like that around the house incase I take a reaction. When we go food shopping it takes a while to check ingredients of food packaging and toiletries as well. Cooking can also be a hassle, sometimes we need to have separate dishes and deep clean pots and pans.

When my first mild reaction occurred I was in an Asian restaurant in Lanzarote where my friend ordered chicken with a dip in sauce and told me to try a piece. I did and it was amazing … I started to feel like something wasn’t right … my lips started to swell slightly and I had difficulty breathing and started to wheeze like I do when my Asthma flares up. My parents and my friend were telling me to drink water and take my inhaler. I did just that, took two antihistamines and I started to feel better. I was so confused as to what had happened although I just ignored it. When you grow into an allergy the more often you are exposed to it, the quicker the reaction occurs.

I came back to Glasgow and a month or so later and went to a local bar/restaurant with my mum and family friends for food one evening and had decided to order a chicken satay which is basically crushed up peanuts and I finished the lot. About two/three minutes passed and I was coming out in hives, my lips had swollen, I had trouble breathing, I felt like I was going to faint …. I had similar feelings to the mild reaction except they were amplified. An ambulance was phoned and it arrived so quickly, I was so lucky. They then shocked us all by telling me I am allergic to nuts and peanuts and that I was going into anaphylactic shock. This is where your body’s natural defence system over reacts to a trigger and essentially goes into shutdown mode. After being injected with adrenaline I could feel the reaction reversing gradually. When I arrived at the hospital I was so overwhelmed by the situation that I couldn’t believe what had just happened, I knew myself I was lucky to be alive after hearing horror stories about people not making it.

It took me a while to adjust to living with my food allergy, I was scared to eat out and I felt worried about eating normal things that wouldn’t cause a reaction just incase the same thing happened again, however overtime it has gotten better. Sometimes, I get apprehensive when I eat out just because I panic incase something does happen. Living with a food allergy can be mentally challenging just as much as it can be physically.

Food restaurant chains that are great for dealing with allergies are:

  • T.G.I Friday’s
  • Hard Rock Cafe
  • Nandos
  • Miller and Carter Steakhouse

Local Glasgow restaurants that are great for dealing with allergies are:

  • Paesano’s Pizza
  • BRGR
  • Cafe Strange Brew
  • TriBecca
  • Amore
  • La Vita
  • Cafe Andaluz

There are a lot of precautions you can take to make sure a reaction doesn’t happen such as:

  • Always carry two Epi-Pen auto injectors on you
  • Always carry anti-histamines
  • Make sure whoever is with you is aware on how to use your Epi-Pen
  • If you go abroad alert the airline how you are allergic to nuts
  • Use translate cards when travelling abroad. I used the APP ‘Nuts and Peanuts Allergy Translation’ however there are many others that allow you to select what you are allergic to.
  • When eating out, always let waiters and waitresses aware of your allergy, even if it is a hamburger with chips … you need know if there is a sauce or seasoning that has something in it you can’t have

I hope this post has allowed people to be slightly more aware of allergies. I hope that it has helped people who have them know that they are able to talk to people about it and that it is normal to feel wary when eating out and trying new things. Just know you aren’t the only one and that there is always someone to talk to.

For The Love of Activewear

Hey Guys,

Hope you are all having a good week, especially because it’s payday!!!

So… this morning I realised that I was going to be snowed in which has actually gone in my favour because now, I can actually catch up on all of the things I have been too busy to do from the comfort of my bed (thank you snow!)

I wanted to write a post about activewear and the best item’s to buy depending on what you do, whether you practice yoga, go to classes, run, dance or weight-lift. I want to talk about two of my new found favourite activewear brands, Gymshark and LuLu Lemon.

Gymshark

A fellow blogger friend of mine (StyleByMLM) loves the brand Gymshark and has recently got me into loving the brand as well. I don’t know what it is about activewear but I am so fussy when it comes to not being able to physically see items first before buying them but I am so glad I decided to try out the brand after hearing so many good reviews.

I purchased five item’s from the brand and they were all a perfect fit and of a great quality. What I love about Gymshark is that the products are still fashionable whilst being functional at the same time.

I can’t rate the sport bra’s enough, they are so comfortable and have good support and retail at £28. Most of the other styles retail around £28-£30. The second item is the ballet crop top that is £26, I purchased this top in blue and I love it. I also purchased the long sleeved pink top that retails at £30. Usually, I dress in black and white so it was nice to add a bit of colour into my workout clothes. The dry sculpture leggings are currently on sale at £25 and they are so comfortable and great for any workout. (they dry so quickly too after washing them) The bottom right navy leggings are the winter running leggings retailing at £40, they are great for holding in insulation  whilst regulating your temperature at the same time. They also have a zip pocket at the back. Generally, Gymshark have activewear to suit most activities. I love mine for doing anything weight orientated or even going to a step or body pump class. I would definitely recommend, plus you can get discount if you are a student through the Student Beans website.

LuLuLemon

When I was in Australia in October, I discovered the brand Lu Lu Lemon as it is so big over there compared to Glasgow. Me and my friend loved the brand and purchased all sorts of workout clothes. To my amazement, there is a LuLu Lemon store based in Glasgow City Centre (I honestly don’t know how I never came across it before) I was recently at a Kiehl”s Inner Strength event in Glasgow where LuLu Lemon came along to showcase the brands high-waisted leggings that I was gifted and they are an absolute dream! LuLuLemons ranges are perfect for any kind of training or practice from running, lifting, yoga or just generally working out at the gym.

The leggings I had been given at the event were the ‘Align Pant 25’ that you can see below. They are amazing for practicing Yoga in. The leggings are designed to lower distractions and have optimum comfort, they are so lightweight and you don’t feel restricted. The high-rise covers your core and they are perfect for teaming up with a sports bra or crop top. The leggings retail at £88 but it is totally worth it because they will last you such a long time and they are so comfy. The pair I purchased in Perth are also a delight and have been worn A LOT!

Apolis: Advocacy Through Industry

Good evening guys, I hope you are all having a good start to the week.

Tonight, I wanted to share with you the American brand Apolis that is based in Los Angeles, California in the U.S.A. I can’t begin to tell you all the amazing work this brand does to encourage a social change in aiming to improve the lives of those that live in third world countries as well as improving environmental standards … also, I can’t fail to mention the brands great range and quality of products. I am privileged to have been given the opportunity to promote the brand, particularly due to the efforts of Apolis making a difference in the diverse world that we live in.

Two brothers named Raan and Shea Parton (you can see above) founded the Apolis brand in 2004 when they had been influenced from their travels that involved a lot of ups and downs, this gave them inspiration to create a simple business idea that could create social change and help build bridges to economic development. Both brothers have a commitment to global advocacy. They have partnered with manufacturers in Uganda, Banglandesh, Peru and even nearby the main base of Apolis in Los Angeles to name a few. The brands business model of ‘Advocacy Through Industry’ aims to encourage individuals to determine their own future.

Apolis are a Certified B corporation and what this means is that they have went above and beyond the standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

The brand sells lots of different  T-shirts, shirts, jackets, blazers, trousers, swimwear and many kinds of accessories that can even be personalised! What’s not to love?

I was gifted this personalised market tote bag that is a godsend for all of the stuff I carry around with me on a daily basis as well as doing a food shop of course. I have to admit, I am not the best at being environmentally friendly but this is a step in the right direction for avoiding the use of plastic bags.

After looking into how the bags are produced and the projects behind the manufacturing process really amazed me. I found a Youtube video that showed ‘The Bangladesh Project’ that involved woman manufacturing market bags like my personalised one that I have shown you all above. The project has helped support local orphanages within the Northern area of Bangladesh by providing school supplies and uniforms as well as facilitating literacy programmes for families within the community, this emphasises how the brand is creating such a difference for individuals in areas around less developed countries as well as giving woman more skills and an income to live on. You can have a look at the video here, I would definitely encourage you all to check it out as it really is inspiring.

The finest quality of materials is used to manufacture the products allowing them to last for a long duration without wear and tear, they are also very fashionable as well in my opinion. You can have a look at the website via the link below to see some of the products that Apolis sell.

My Experience with Cocoa Locks

Hey Guys,

Can you believe we are into the second week in January already?

Today I wanted to talk about my collaboration with the brand Cocoa Locks which is a product that uses powerful hair vitamins in a chocolate shake or hot chocolate form. What’s not to love?

Cocoa Locks promise that with the use of their products you will receive the following benefits:

Longer, Stronger & Thicker Hair

Ease of convenience just to having one shake/hot chocolate a day

Clinically Proven Fast Hair Growth

Better Absorption Than Traditional Tablets

Only 32 Calories

All The Vital Vitamins And Nutrients

Delicious Hot Chocolate/Chocolate Shake For Fabulous Hair

So, hot chocolate and a chocolate hair shake that tastes amazing and makes your hair grow… I thought it would be too good to be true, however I found the Cocoa Locks one month hair trial beneficial towards my journey to having longer and healthier hair. You can see people who have tried the products results via the link below.

https://www.cocoalocks.com/pages/about-us

Personally, I am always sceptical about products that promise to grow you hair or make you slimmer etc… however, I really wanted to give this one a try after seeing the amazing results that came along from people’s experiences. My hair grows at a snails pace and generally grows out the way rather than down. Since starting the Cocoa Locks programme I’ve found my hair to be in a much better condition in terms of it feeling healthier, smoother, fuller, less frizzy, maintainable and stronger which is helping my hair grow. I have noticed a slight difference in length of around half an inch, which believe me is impressive for my hair.

Every single person is different and achieves different results at different paces when using the hair programme. I aim to continue the programme for another two months as I am starting to see the benefits of the product already and can’t wait to see the results over the next eight weeks.
